A Home away from Home ...

Several decades ago a noble movement was initiated in America to support sick children and their families. The Ronald McDonald Houses – available in numerous places of the world – offer conditions similar to the home environment free of charge, to children suffering from serious illnesses – requiring hospital treatment for a longer time - and their family members, they offer a home away from home.

Since 1994 the Ronald McDonald Children Aid Foundation has been assisting Hungarian families, with seriously ill children requiring longer hospital treatment, far away from home. Its mission is to keep family members close to sick children while they are treated, because this can largely contribute to their healing. To complete this mission the Foundation operates apartment houses in Budapest and Miskolc, that are available to families – based on the recommendation of paediatric healthcare institutions cooperating with the Foundation – free of charge.

Families residing in the Budapest and Miskolc houses enjoy almost the same living conditions as at home. Sick children can stay together with their families in their own apartment, while they can also play together with other children in the common living room. Although little patients spend part of the days in the hospital, the closeness of their family largely contribute to easing the burden of illnesses and the treatments.
